Backlogs at licensing centres ‘almost cleared’

The City of Johannesburg’s Licensing Department is on track to clear backlogs caused by a number of wildcat strikes late last year that raised the ire of motorists who could not renew their licences or pay for their expired disks.

 

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Spokesperson, Superintendent Edna Mamonyane said the backlogs had almost been cleared although the Randburg and Marlboro licensing centres were still experiencing high volumes of clients.

“This is about loyalty. People have been using these centres for a long time. They were reluctant to go to other centres despite our advice,” Superintendent Mamonyane said.

“During the strikes we advised clients to go to SA Post Office outlets and provincial centres for assistance at no extra cost. Those who had booked and paid for learners’ or drivers’ licences were allowed to reschedule their dates. Since the new year, at least two testing stations – Randburg and Midrand – have been open daily and on Saturdays between 8am and midday.Superintendent Mamonyane also announced that JMPD had introduced a new system for car dealers, which would help to decongest licensing centres."

“From now on, bulk renewals of five up to 100 vehicles will be processed at our Loveday and Village licensing centres. We no longer take cash so the car dealers can pay via debit cards or bank guaranteed cheques,” she said.

Superintendent Mamonyane said motorists who had been issued with enforcement orders would not be able to renew they licence disks until they had paid all the outstanding amounts.

“The orders are issued by eNatis. We, as a department, cannot do anything about that. [eNatis] are the ones who block you. So you have to pay your fine to be able to renew the disk,” she concluded.
