Bigger, better bins for Midrand
23-01-2015

Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management company, has started rolling out new and bigger rubbish bins in several suburbs and townships across the city in a fresh move to improve and enhance rubbish collection.

On Saturday February 1, city officials will be moving from door to door handing out the new 240-litre bins to no fewer than 11 000 households in Allendale, Ebony Park and Kaalfontein in Midrand, Region A, according to Christa Venter, Pikitup’s General Manager: Business Process Re-engineering.

Residents of Rabie Ridge, Ivory Park, Commercial and Klipfontein will receive theirs in the second phase.

The 240-litre bins replace the 85-litre and plastic bins, which are being phased out.

Venter says in some areas, plastic bags had become a health hazard as dogs tore them. This also caused problems for Pikitup crew members.

“The new and bigger bins cost R495 each but they will last for 10 years. In the long run, they are better and cost-effective as plastic bags cost 70 cents each and each household got two a week,” she says.

She has appealed to residents to take good care of the new bins.

“No hot ash or builders’ rubble such as bricks please. People must take recyclables to garbage sites until we roll out Jozi@Work, a programme that will include separation at source elements,” Venter says.

She says the city still encourages the separation of refuse at source to promote recycling.

Venter emphasises that the new bins will not get in the way of the separation at source initiatives.

In Protea Glen Extension 27, Soweto, the rollout of the bigger bins is already under way.

Debbie du Preez, Pikitup’s Head of Operations in Region D, says more than 6 000 bins will be distributed in the next few weeks.

Last weekend more than 400 bins were handed out to households in the township.

“We are giving the residents these bigger bins because there are, in many instances, a lot of backyard dwellers on their properties. We’re also giving the residents a bag every week for recycling.

“The rollout continues this weekend and we expect another 400 people to receive bins. Some people collected their bins during the week,” says Du Preez.

All new areas will or are receiving the bigger bins.

To get the new bins, homeowners are required to have a copy of their municipal account and identity document. They can call Joburg Connect for help if they have any queries.
