City allocates Jozi@Work packages worth R1.2 million

Three of the City of Johannesburg’s entities on Tuesday 2 February offered small businesses and co-operatives in Region C eight work packages totalling R1.2-million under Jozi@Work, a mayoral initiative aimed at tackling unemployment, poverty and inequality.

 

This took place at the Discovery Recreation Centre in Roodepoort, at the first of a series of information-sharing sessions in the region this week.

The hall was packed to the brim by small businesspeople and members of co-operatives from areas such as Florida, Roodepoort, Braamfischerville, Constantia Kloof and Northgate. Other information-sharing sessions were due to be held at Tshepisong and Cosmo City.

The work packages – offered by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO), City Power and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) – ranged from gardening to street cleaning and maintenance of street lights. Ronald Mutheiwana presented JOSHCO’s work packages.

“We await applications for gardening work at Tshedzani Flats on the corner of Kerk and Nefdt streets in Roodepoort. The total package for the project is R251 200,” said Mutheiwana.

He also announced another gardening project – for Fleurhof Flats – at the corner of Helpmekaar Street and Minerva Road in Fleurhof, also totalling R251 200.

City Power’s Foster Moagi pleaded with communities to be vigilant against the theft and vandalism of streets lights. He presented three work packages:

• The welding of street lights’ pole covers valued R100 000;

• The painting of street light poles, also valued at R100 000; and

• The maintenance of streets lights, valued at R300 000.

JRA’s Lawrence Maseko offered businesses just under R200 000 for vegetation control along some of its streets and roads.

“Our projects are in three different wards of Region C and are divided into skoffelling, chemical spray and street sweeping. The work package for Ward 70 will total R113.437.65. For Ward 84 it will be R21.468.75, while for Ward 85 it will be in the region od R59.625.00,” said Maseko.

Yolande Janse van Rensburg, Assistant Director of Region C’s Citizen Relationship Management (CRUM), told the attendees it was important to complete the expression of interest forms correctly.

“It is important that you complete the forms correctly, in full, and furnish us with every relevant information – your full names, contact details and the work package you are applying for,” she said.

She said work packages were not tenders but meant to be accessed by start-up businesses. The Capability Support Agency (CSA) will assist successful applicants to ensure they have all the required tools to carry out the tasks.

The 2015-2016 Jozi@Work budget stands at a staggering R3-billion.
