City declares war on Randburg crime and grime

Staff members from the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco) and members of the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) took to the streets of Randburg in a major clean-up operation on 23 October, to make way for a housing development. Armed with brooms, rubbish bags, gloves and masks, they invaded the area around the old Randburg Magistrate’s court, picking up bottles, papers, plastics, old tyres and other rubbish.
 

The clean-up started on 22 October, with members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), accompanied by members of the South African Police Services (SAPS), evicting illegal occupants of the site who had turned the place into a dumping site. The Waste Reclaimers assisted in removing the rubble to be reused or sold.
 

“The Randburg CPF had already started a clean-up programme around Randburg coming towards the taxi rank. We joined in and assisted as the tender is being prepared to fence off this area. After cleaning up this space, Joshco will develop social housing units for the community of Randburg. There is a design of 750 housing units which will be modelled on the land,” said Obakeng Nyudu from Joscho.
 

According to Nyudu, Joshco has now deployed security guards who will guard the place around the clock. The guards will ensure that there is no illegal dumping in this space again. 
 

“We anticipate that the fencing will be done by December and the development should follow starting in January 2015.The construction of the units will take three to five years period,” added Nyundu.
