City dishes out Jozi@Work packages

Four City of Johannesburg entities have offered township businesses and co-operatives in Region E work packages worth more than R4-million under Jozi@Work, an unmatched job-creation and mass empowerment programme spearheaded by Executive Mayor Councillor Parks Tau.
At a briefing session at the Marlboro Community Centre on Tuesday March 8, JOSHCO, the City’s social housing company, announced nine work packages with a combined value totalling R2.172-million for the painting of Bothlabela Village in Alexandra. Work is expected to start on April 1 and be completed by May 30.
JOSCHO Housing Supervisor in Region E Charity Sedise told the packed hall that the work entailed preparation of surfaces and plastered walls, including replastering and the application of a primer. She added that paintwork would also be done to ceilings and cornices, fascia and barge boards, roof coverings and timbers, window frames, burglar bars, steel cages, balustrades, gutters and downpipes.
The City’s Group Corporate and Shared Services Department presented three different packages on behalf of waste management entity Pikitup for the cleaning, sanitisation and lubrication of the MOE’s specialised waste management vehicles on a weekly basis at its Marlboro depot wash bay; removal of dirt, debris, contaminants and other related material from the interiors and exteriors of the vehicles, including hoppers and rams; and the lubrication of hydraulic and other lifting equipment on the vehicles.
The packages are worth more than R1.5-million. Work will take place over 12 months, starting on April 1.The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) offered two packages with a combined value totalling R500 000.
The work includes the development of linear markets or trading stalls near and around the Pan Africa Taxi Rank in Alexandra.
According to Lerato Kola, JDA’s Development Manager in Region E, the stalls must suit existing trading activities and be approved by all affected parties. Kola said the work entailed the paving and upgrading of public pavements, and the upgrading of storm water infrastructure and architectural and urban design elements.
Kola said the other package involved the upgrading of the Rea Vaya bus rapid transit system on the Phase 1C route and hard landscaping along Katherine Street, between West Street and West Brook Street, in Sandton.
Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo wants township SMMEs and co-operatives to do horticultural maintenance work, which includes weeding along the Sandton precinct, litter picking on selected main roads and parks, grass-cutting, and tree and branch collection. The value of the work package was not stated.
Phindi Lethoko, Jozi@Work coordinator in Region E, advised applicants to read the expression of interest forms carefully before filling them in. She also asked them to supply their full addresses instead of stand numbers. The closing date for all packages is Wednesday March 16.
The R3-billion Jozi@Work programme gives residents the opportunity to be their own bosses and be creators of job opportunities instead of being job-seekers by providing the City with services such as cleaning, sweeping, refuse removal, infrastructure maintenance, painting, to mention a few.
