City entities tackle service delivery blockages in Florida

15 June 2017

Several City of Johannesburg’s entities descended on Florida in Roodepoort on Monday June 12 to address service delivery breakdowns and blockages as part of Region C’s ongoing Integrated Community Outreach Programme.

Some of the service delivery challenges the entities tackled were identified during Integrated Development Planning (IDP) meetings held in the Region in March and April this year.

The entities that took part in the operation included the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo (JCPZ), City Power, Pikitup, Johannesburg Water, Johannesburg Property Company (JPC), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) as well as the Jozi SME Hub.

Officials and employees of the entities rolled up their sleeves to cut the long grass, repaint road marks, repair potholes, prune trees, replace street lights, sweep streets and empty dustbins. The programme also included an educational campaign to sensitise residents about the importance of keeping the environment clean and tidy at all times.

Regional Director Mlamleli Belot said the drive was about tackling “issues making the lives of residents difficult”.
“Some of the issues will take some time to be resolved. Others will take a little longer,” Belot said.

He said the programme was also aimed at helping to build the community’s confidence in the City. “This was also an opportunity for us to lend an ear to residents as they always have great ideas to share,” Belot said. “As the City, we do listen and we want to work with our residents.”

Deputy Director of Integrated Service Delivery Phindile Lakaje said the programme identified challenges that Florida residents had often complained about.

“During an IDP meeting recently, people complained that the Florida CBD had been neglected and the city was not taking care of it. People wanted to know what the City was doing to ensure that there was urban regeneration.

“We have realised that our residents want to see the city committing itself to making sure that its services are visible. The City is ensuring that all the issues that have been identified by the community are attended to,” Lakaje said.
