City extends contract of chief operating officer

The contract of the City of Johannesburg’s Chief Operations Officer, Gerald Dumas, has been extended to the end of June 2017.

 

This was announced by Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba during a monthly council meeting at the legislature in Braamfontein on Tuesday September 27.

Dumas’s five-year contract was extended by nine months after a recommendation by City Manager Trevor Fowler. Fowler’s contract also expires at the end of this month but it has since been extended to the end of December 2016.

Mayor Mashaba told the council meeting that the process of finding Fowler’s successor had begun and that an announcement would be made as soon as a suitable candidate had been found.

Cllr Mashaba announced earlier this month that the council had recommended that members of the selection panel include himself, Cllr Musa Novela of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Cllr Meshack van Wyk, Cllr Valencia Ntombi Khumalo and Martin Hopkins, an expert.

During this week’s monthly meeting, Speaker of Council Vasco da Gama asked councillors to observe a moment of silence in honour of kwaito star Mduduzi “Mandoza” Tshabalala, who died recently of cancer at the age of 38 and was buried at West Park Cemetery on Friday September 23, and former Rand Daily Mail editor Allister Sparks, who died on September 19 aged 83.

Paying tribute to Mandoza, Cllr Da Gama said the singer’s music, especially his multi-platinum hit “Nkalakatha”, transcended all social and racial barriers.

Cllr Da Gama also announced that Lunga Xuma would replace Nonhlanhla Mthembu, the African National Congress councillor who died during the inauguration of the new council at the Johannesburg City Hall on Monday August 22.

Councillors will go on a week’s recess – from Monday October 3 to Friday October 7.
