City officials enforce by-laws in Region A

City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun, swopped his air-conditioned offices for fresh crispy air to interact with motorists and commuters in Region A’s Broadacres this week.

 

Early morning commuters were surprised to see the area around the Cedar and Lombardy roads intersection teeming with officials from various City of Joburg departments at 6am on Wednesday, October 26.

Cllr Sun said he was there to see for himself what problems JMPD officers face on the streets every day.

The intersection and surrounding area has been identified by the community and commuters as a hotspot for law-breaking taxis, sidewalk traders and illegal signage. JMPD officers ensured taxis at the intersection followed the rules of the road and adhered to City by-laws. The officers also removed a bakkie-load of illegal signage at the intersection. Also lending his support to JMPD officers was Cllr Dave Foley of Ward 94, who believes that residents should take ownership of their area, get more involved in clean-up campaigns and report service delivery issues.

Joburg Emergency Management Services and Pikitup officials spoke to commuters on the sidewalks about recycling at their homes. Officials handed out pamphlets on safety tips for the approaching holiday season.

At the end of the event, Region A Director Abigail Ndlovu said this was not a once-off occasion.

“We have been executing this programme successfully for a while and will continue it through the whole region.”
