City on the lookout for out-of-the-box thinkers

05-02-2015

For as long as you can remember, you have always been called a maverick, someone who thinks out of the box.

When others pack up their shovels and dejectedly walk away, you doggedly stick around and finally strike gold. When others turn back at a cul-de-sac, you fashion a new path.

You are a person who makes the impossible possible, who sees beauty where there is none. All your life you have followed the rules but added a little pizzazz to make your creations stand out. You have not allowed yourself to be burdened by convention.

If structural designs are your bread and butter; if you see order in a chaotic space, then you are probably the person the City of Johannesburg is looking for to help it carve alternative rental accommodation solutions.

In fact, the City is looking for innovative engineers with an eye for structural designs.

The City has acknowledged the existence of informal accommodation market.

The current demand for shelter far surpasses supply. Out-of-the-box thinkers are invited to submit proposals for structural designs for alternative rental shelters that ensure the safety and comfort of occupants.

The design should take into account safety, technical, economic and environmental concerns as well as consideration of aesthetic and social factors.

“Alternative rental accommodation represents a fundamental component of the housing market in Johannesburg, with an estimated 320 000 informal dwellings located within the City limits,” says Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing Clr Dan Bovu.

“If you have what it takes to contribute to making Johannesburg a world-class African City, then submit your proposal for an innovative housing solution that would appeal to this rental market.”

Although consideration will be given to innovation and functionality, current building norms and standards apply.

The Building Standards and Design Guidelines can be accessed from the City’s website: www.joburg.org.za.

A compulsory briefing session will be held on Tuesday 10 February 2015 at the Metro Centre, 158 Civic Boulevard (previously Loveday Street), Braamfontein (opposite the Joburg Theatre) on the10th Floor, A-Block, at 10am.

Proposals must be completed in sets of five - one original and four copies.

Each set must be accompanied by its supporting documentation as annexures. Proposals must be sealed and externally endorsed before submission as: “SHSUP – Proposal for Alternative Rental Accommodation.” They must be submitted to the Building Development Management offices not later than 10.30am on 31 March. Proposals will NOT be opened in public but subjected to adjudication and assessment by the City’s adjudication panel.

Enquiries must be directed to Gideon Strauss on (011) 407-6107 or email gideons@joburg.org.za.
