City outlines IDP projects to improve Region F suburbs

The City of Johannesburg has plans to rid Region F of crime and traffic congestion and accelerate service delivery through the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

 

This was revealed by acting Regional Director Edward Mohale during an IDP review meeting at the South Rand Recreation Centre in South Hills, south of Johannesburg, on Tuesday 11 April.

Mohale said the City had identified wards through the IDP process in the region where service delivery projects would need to be prioritised. “We have also identified major issues in those areas. These are issues involving by-law compliance and law enforcement. We are currently having interventions that run across the wards to resolve these matters.”

He said the service delivery challenges had been incorporated into the IPD by the region, which will involve the response and involvement of law enforcement agencies such as Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Police Services (SAPS) as well as entities such as City Power, Pikitup, Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo, Johannesburg Roads Agency and Johannesburg Water.

Mohale said traffic congestion, especially in the inner city, was making it difficult for residents to arrive on time at their work places or businesses, negatively impacting on productivity and economic growth.

He said traffic congestion was experienced mainly in the morning and late afternoon. He said the City would implement environmental and social facilities to support the Affordable Housing Strategy for Inner City Renewal.

Mohale also announced infrastructure upgrades at the Westgate Precinct to unlock investment. Public environment upgrades have also been earmarked for Noord Street, the Hillbrow Tower precinct, Park Station, Inner City Eastern Gateway, Newtown, Braamfontein, Constitution Hill, Inner City Commuter Links, African Food Hub, Karsene Intermodal facility, the Inner City Core Mayfair/Fordsburg and Westgate.
