City pumps R90-million into Region C’s roads projects

The implementation of the City of Johannesburg’s multimillion rand Roads Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Programme is in full swing in Region C.

 

Spearheaded by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), the City’s entity responsible for roads infrastructure development and maintenance, the programme is part of the City’s drive to invest in and improve Johannesburg’s 13 428km road network.

With a capital budget of more than R90 million for Region C alone, JRA started rolling out several projects from as early as the beginning of the 2015-2016 financial year in July 2015.

 

To date, 22 of the planned 47 projects have been completed, with a further 10 still under construction.Region C spans Johannesburg’s north-western area and has 17 wards these wards consist of areas like Mmesi Park, Doornkop and Thulani, Braamfischerville, Roodekrans, Fleurhof, Roodepoort and Ruimsig, parts of Randburg and northern suburbs such as Olivedale, Northriding, Cosmo City, Quellerina and Zandspruit.

 

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport Councillor Christine Walters says the resurfacing projects in the region will not only improve the general quality of the roads but will also help to ease traffic congestion and boost economic activity.
The completed projects include the resurfacing and markings on:

  • South Road, from Albertina Sisulu Drive to Corlett Avenue in Technicon;

  • McGraff street Witpoortjie

  • Num Num, Bramfischerville

  • Cemetry road , Bramfischerville

  • Umbuluzi , Bramfischerville

  • Pienaar Street, from Main Reef Road in Witpoortjie;

  • Van Staden Road, from Hendrik Potgieter to Van Dalen in Ruimsig;

  • Fredenharry Street, in Strubens Valley;

  • David Road from Golf Club Terrace to Ontdekkers Road in Constantia Kloof;

  • Zebrina Road, from Mimosa Street in Helderkruin;

  • Uys Krige Avenue, from Eitemal Avenue in Florida; and

  • Hex Rivier Road, from CR Swart Road.

Road resurfacing projects currently under way include:

  • Wonderboom and Blouhaak avenues in Weltervreden Park;

  • Petunia Street in Florida;

  • Albertina Sisulu in Technicon;

  • Doreen Avenue in Poortview;

  • Hossack Avenue in Horizon View;

  • Serissa Avenue in Roodekraans;

  • Fairway Street in Ruimsig; and

  • Florin Road in Wilgeheuwel;

Several other roads resurfacing projects have been planned for areas such as Davidsonville, Doornkop, Thulani, Horison, Weltervreden Park, Helderkruin and Ruimsig

Other projects planned for the 2015-2016 financial year include:

  • Gravel Roads Upgrade (Tshepisong, Bramfisvherville, Doornkop and Thulani)

  • Reconstruction and Rehabilitation (various streets)

  • Conversion of open drain to underground (Bramfisherville)

  • Mmesi Park stormwater improvement, Meadowlands Ext 11

  • Critical and Emergency Stormwater

  • Visual Bridge Inspection and rehabilitation fo bridge especially overtopping and flooding bridges.(All wards)

  • The installation of proactive measures to ease traffic flow and improve safety along key arterials;

  • Installation of traffic signals to alleviate congestion at the corner of Jim Fouche and Wilhelmina roads, and Paul Kruger and Amplifier streets; and

  • The upgrading of traffic signals and pedestrian walkways as part of the Geometric Improvement Programme.

Work will also include comprehensive street maintenance; the repairing, maintenance and installation of traffic signals; and the installation of remote monitoring systems at key points, including crime hot spots.
In the past financial year, JRA successfully completed two R18 million projects: the highly technical reconstruction of a collapsed culvert and partially collapsed roadway at the Felstead Road Bridge in Northriding; and the reconstruction and modification of a collapsed major culvert that threatened a road embankment Cornelius Street, Weltevreden Park.

JRA has also repaired 45 000 potholes – exceeding its target by 2 000 potholes – and cleaned more than 7 500 kerb inlets along main arterials.
