City spends R30 million on new public lighting systems

Developing areas in the Midrand area will soon have their streets illuminated.

City Power, the City of Johannesburg’s power supply and maintenance entity, is to spend more than R2 million in the current financial year to provide public lighting systems in areas such as Randjespark, President Park and Mafelandawonye.

These areas are currently without public lighting.
 

The expenditure is part of a R30 million budget allocated under the entity’s citywide Public Lighting Programme to ensure that as many areas as possible in Johannesburg are covered.
 

Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environment and Infrastructure Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe says the rollout of the new public lighting systems would not only uplift these areas but would also make them safer at night for residents.
 

Nocky Dipheko, City Power’s Manager:  Public Lighting, says: “The Public Lighting Programme, of which the Midrand public lighting project is part, is a multi-year venture. With a budget of R2 million in the 2014-2015 financial year for developing areas in Midrand, we will be able to install about 200 street lights.”

Dipheko says public lighting systems had come a long way in ensuring energy- efficiency. 

City Power uses long-lasting and energy-efficient high pressure sodium lamps.
