City’s billing regionalisation ‘makes meter reading easy’

28 March 2017

Johannesburg ratepayers can now check online when their electricity and water meters will be read.

City of Johannesburg spokesman Kgamanyane Maphologela says the new billing regionalisation system has made it possible for customers to track online the dates in which they can prepare to have meter readers come and read them.

“One of the challenges the City faces when trying to read meters is that the properties they want to [gain entry to] are often inaccessible. The online service can assist customers to note the meter reading dates in their areas and make arrangements so their meters can be read,” says Maphologela.

The first phase of billing regionalisation was launched on 1 February 2017 in regions A, B and C. The City is planning to launch the second phase to include other regions not currently catered for later this year.

Maphologela says billing regionalisation will see the City streamlining its billing operations, which will result in improved billing accuracy, the ability of customers to choose their own due dates, regional meter reading, reduced estimate billing and audit queries, limiting collection dates and informed reporting per region to afford improvement and problem solving.

Maphologela says customers now have the freedom to choose their own dates on which to pay the City between the 15th and first day of the month. He says many have chosen the 28th as their preferred due date.

The second-most preferred date customers have chosen to pay their accounts is the 31st of each month. Customers can check online the meter reading schedules by visiting the City’s website www.joburg.org.za, click on the e-Service and put in their suburb or area to get the schedule.

Customers wishing to choose their own due dates can do so by visiting any of the City’s customer service centres, phone the call centre on 0860 Joburg (562 874) or send an e-mail to duedates@joburg.org.za.
