Development, road congestion dominate Region A IDP session
08 November 2017
The City of Johannesburg is pumping a lot of money into social infrastructure such as a library, a sport field, an indoor sport center, roads and bridges amongst others in various communities of Region A.
Residents who attended the first scheduled IDP meeting in Region A at Halfway House Primary School, on 2 November 2017; heard that the City was constructing some of the social infrastructure which the residents had requested. In addition, other infrastructure projects were on the pipeline already.
Region A covers the northern gateway to the city, including upmarket areas such as Dainfern, Farmall, Fourways, Kya Sands and Chartwell, townships such as Rabie Ridge and Ivory Park plus informal settlements such as Diepsloot.
The City is currently going across Johannesburg to different communities to present its budget and give residents the opportunity to see how much money is allocated for their neighborhoods.
Addressing a packed hall, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun, said: "We are building amenities to the tune of R1.5 million in ward 92."
Residents at the meeting raised concerns about traffic congestion caused by development and insufficient road infrastructure. Some residents complained that development in the region was happening too fast, which has led to too many complex issues arising.
MMC Sun responded by saying that the City had budgeted about R20 million over three years towards the tarring of road in extension 23.
"Some of the roads are already on the list for phase two of current work which is undertaken by the Johannesburg Roads Agency. The remainder of the roads will be constructed under phase three," said MMC Sun.
MMC Sun said the City plans to build a bridge to cross between Sagewood and Le Roux Street to Noordwyk in ward 112. Other major projects in the planning phase include the building of a bridge in Emfulani extension one and two, and the building of a proper sport field in ward 112.
Current projects taking place in various Region A wards include:
Upgrade of sewer line – Ward 77 & 79
Kaalspruit Eco-Park Development – Ward 78
Gravels roads upgrade project – Wards 78 & 111
Implementation of Complete Street Features in Ivory Park – Ward 77
