DJ Black Coffee wows Joburg fans

02 October 2015

For hundreds of people in Johannesburg, the weekend started early as they danced into the night at the launch of award-winning DJ Black Coffee’s latest CD on Thursday October 1.

The launch party, held at the Joburg Theatre Park in Braamfontein, was preceded by an open-top double decker bus ride through the city’s streets.

The festivities were organised by the City of Johannesburg to recognise Black Coffee for the international DJ Awards that he has received. The DJ Awards were created in 1998 to recognise and celebrate the talents of the greatest DJs in the world. Expecting fun, music lovers started streaming into the park from as early as 1pm. The young, hip and happening and the youthful at heart made their presence felt on the dance floor.

The launch of the album, Pieces of Me, came two days after the highly acclaimed DJ was crowned Breakthrough DJ of the Year in Ibiza, Spain. He was also presented with the Dance Nation of the Year award for South Africa.

Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, seems very popular among dance music lovers. Sibusiso Mkhize, 34, who works on the eighth floor of a building opposite the park, kept on checking his phone for missed calls and messages.

“I heard the familiar music from my office and decided to come down to see what was happening,” he said, referring to Black Coffee’s We Dance Again single blurring from massive speakers and amplifiers perched on the lawns overlooking the theatre’s entrance.

“I love Black Coffee’s music because he’s not only a DJ but a fully-fledged musician who has studied music and writes, composes, arranges and produces,” added Mkhize before excusing himself to return to his desk.

Although Black Coffee arrived in a convoy flanked by motorbike escorts and an open-top bus filled with screaming school kids in the late afternoon, he was only due to start spinning his magic from 10pm. By 6pm the park was overflowing with young adults, who were enjoying themselves as local DJs entertained them with some of the latest dance music tunes, including beats written by Black Coffee.
