Drama brings real and dream worlds together

The stage adaptation of PB Maphumulo’s book, Kudela Owaziyo, into an isiZulu drama is a fascinating interpretation of a gripping story of events set in both the dream and real worlds.
Adopted as a school literature set book a few years ago, the play has proved to be very popular. This was demonstrated when it was staged in front of packed audiences in several theatres across the country, including the Joburg Theatre.
Directed by Thembani Maseko, Kudela Owaziyo was brought to the Joburg Theatre Youth Development in partnership with Siyaphilela Community Development. The play is a musical and dance offering covering issues such as abuse, xenophobia, bribery and betrayal. The story draws from biblical and cultural beliefs as it follows one man’s life as he defines the success of his family through the education of his daughters.
He, however, has a dream that threatens to unsettle the success he has built for his family. The dream comes as a premonition that threatens to undo everything he has worked very hard for.
The premonition morphs into a real life situation and things start going pear-shaped for him. The cast – which includes Vusi Gule, Jabulile Masuku, Amanda Mpungose, Maria Seopela, Vusi Hlatshwayo and Jabulani Dhladhla – is simply fantastic. It injects unique and fresh energy into the story.
The all-isiZulu presentation makes the production very interesting. It is definitely one of the best plays to have had a run at the Joburg Theatre this year. By tackling important social issues, the stage drama resonated with the audiences and kept them captivated.
Because of its interactive nature it created an edutainment experience for younger audiences and introduced an element of fun. Its growing popularity is proof that audiences are very keen on plays staged in vernacular languages.
