Give Jozi’s new broadband entity a name and win

01 October 2015

The City of Johannesburg has established a new municipal entity (ME) for its broadband network and is calling on all residents to come up with a creative name for it.

The new City-owned company joins a family of MEs already boasting names such as Pikitup, City Power, JOSHCO, to name a few.

Any City resident who comes up with a unique, exciting and catchy name for the new ME stands to win a cool R10 000 prize. The names must be original and entrants are cautioned to steer clear of the usual suspects, including terms such as connectivity, wired, among others.

The new ME is essentially an open access fibre operator whose major objective is to bridge the city’s digital divide and transform Johannesburg into a true world-class African City of the future. Launched to ensure the delivery of the City’s Growth and Development Strategy 2040 (GDS 2040) Smart City drive, the new entity will be responsible for connecting and maintaining broadband distribution across the city.

The City has rolled out over 1150km of fibre optic cables, creating one of the best and fastest-growing cable networks in Africa and positioning Johannesburg as Africa’s leading investment and commercial destination. This strategic entity will assist in the acceleration of economic growth and development, attracting investment, enhancing access to services and improving the quality of life.

Being a digital city will also result in reduced cost of telecommunications, improved service delivery and increase in access to information technology.

To enter and stand a chance to win the R10 000 prize, please tweet @Cityofjoburgza your suggested name using #JoburgBroadband on or before 13 October 2015. The competition closes on 13 October 2015. Terms and conditions apply. For more information, visit www.joburg.org.za
