Gordhan to launch Afri-Cities Summit in Jozi

 

Preparations for the hosting of the seventh edition of the Afri-Cities Summit in Johannesburg in December next year get under way this week with the launch of the five-day continental conference at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan, at a seminar on Tuesday October 14.
 

Other dignitaries who will be at the launch include United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLGA) President Khalifa Sall, Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Parks Tau, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and South African Local Government Association Chairman Cllr Thabo Manyoni.
 

More than 60 delegates are expected to attend.

Next year’s summit will be held under the theme: “Shaping the Future of Africa with the People: Africa’s Local Government Contribution to the Africa 2063 Vision.”

This is one of several high-profile global events to be held in the City of Johannesburg since the dawn of democracy in 1994.
 

The other African cities that have hosted the Afri-Cities Summit since 1998 are Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, Windhoek, Namibia (2000), Yaounde, Cameroon (2003), Nairobi, Kenya (2006), Marrakech, Morocco (2009) and Dakar, Senegal (2012)

Previous summits have brought together between 4 500 and 5 000 participants from all the regions of the world, predominantly Africa.
 

It is expected that the seventh edition will surpass previous attendance records. 

Typically, participants include national ministers; mayors; private sector representatives; academics and researchers; professionals and local government experts; and representatives of national, regional and international funding institutions, Unites Nations agencies, and international cooperation organisations.
