IEC sets aside two days for voter registration

04 February 2016

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has set aside two days in March for voter registration as part of its preparations for the upcoming local government elections.

Although the date for the elections has not yet been determined, the IEC is encouraging citizens who turned 18 since the last elections – in 2014 – to register to vote on Saturday March 5 and Sunday March 6.

The registration will take place between 8am and 5pm on both days. People who have changed addresses need to update their details. Local government elections are held every five years. The IEC says anyone can register to vote if he or she is a South African citizen, is 18 years old or older and possesses a green, bar-coded ID book, smartcard ID or a valid temporary ID certificate.

Alternatively, one can apply for registration during office hours at the lEC’s office responsible for one’s voting district. By law, you must apply in person. No online or e-mail registrations are permitted. No other forms of identification are accepted. No proof of residence is required.

You must register in the voting district in which you live and vote at the voting station where you are registered.
If you are already registered as a voter and you have recently moved or you realise that you will be living in another place on election day (for example, if you are a student), you must go back to a registration point and fill in a form to change your registration details.

You will then be moved to the correct voting district and your name will be put on the voters’ roll for that district. To find out where your correct voting station is, go tohttp://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/

You can “like” the IEC on Facebook (IECSouthAfrica) or follow it on Twitter (@IECSouthAfrica).
