Joburg events infrastructure put on world stage in Spain

30 November 2016

The Johannesburg Convention Bureau, which is part of Joburg Tourism, is one of the exhibitors at the International Business and Tourism Meetings world convention in Barcelona, Spain, this week.

The annual tourism industry event kicked off on Tuesday November 29 and runs until Thursday December 1 and brings together buyers and organisers of large international meetings.

Two Joburg representatives are overseeing the exhibition in the South African Tourism Pavilion. The Johannesburg Convention Bureau is responsible for promoting Joburg as a premier business events destination, providing innovative options and ensuring that patrons leave with memorable experiences.

According to Joburg Tourism’s Laura Vercueil, events such as these are important for tourism and big business meetings as the City of Johannesburg hosts several prestigious big ticket events that have injected millions of rand into the economy every year.

Some of the major events Johannesburg has hosted include the World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002), World Petroleum Congress (2005), Soccer World Cup (2010), International Conference on Crime and Criminal Justice (2012), International Mining Congress (2012), One Young World Summit (2013), World Anti-Doping Conference (2013), C40 Mayor’s Summit (2014), World Orchid Conference (2014), World Congress on Public Relations (2015), International Symposium on Mine Planning and Equipment Selection (2015), Africities Summit and AU Summit (2015), Conference of the African Health Economics and Policy Association (2016), Africa and Middle East Conference of the Junior Chamber International (2016), Meetings Africa (2016), International Commission on Large Dams (2016) and CITES COP 17 (2016).

“Hosting events has a direct and positive economic and development impact on the city and all who work and play within its boundaries. Economic benefits include spend, job creation and changing the perceptions of visitors,” says Vercueil.

“Large business events often attract between 500 and 1 000 international guests, who generally stay for between 14 and 19 days, with a direct or indirect contribution to the tourism value chain, including accommodation, restaurants, tourist attractions and transport services.”

Joburg is the continent’s financial and commercial hub and an all-year-round destination for leisure, lifestyle, sports and mega-events. More importantly, it is a centre for trade, development and investment opportunities.

Local tourism, which has boomed over the past 20 years, also benefits from business tourism and meetings as tourists also visit local attractions such as the Origins Centre at Wits University, Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto, Museum Africa and the SAB World of Beer.
