Joburg Mayor Mashaba pays tribute to kwaito star Mandoza

 

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba joined a host of other prominent South Africans who paid tribute to kwaito star Mandoza, who died on Sunday September 18 following a long battle with cancer.

 

Speaking to ANN7 television station shortly after being informed of the news, Mayor Mashaba said he was deeply saddened by the passing of Mandoza, whose real name was Mduduzi Tshabalala.

Mayor Mashaba said Mandoza's death was “a huge loss” for South Africa as he still had a lot to contribute. He said Mandoza was the first kwaito star to unite all races through his music.
One of Mandoza’s most popular song, Nkalakatha – which achieved multi-platinum status soon after its release a few years ago – was a cross-over hit that transcended South Africa’s cultural and colour boundaries.

Some of the personalities who paid tribute to Mandoza, 38, on Sunday were President Jacob Zuma, Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa, fellow kwaito musician Eugene Mthethwa, the late musician’s manager Kevin Ntaopane, radio show host Sbu Leope and poet Mzwakhe Mbulu. Mandoza, who lived in Pimville, Soweto, was diagnosed with brain tumour in 2015.

His last public appearance was at an SABC music concert at Orlando Stadium, Soweto, on Saturday September 10, where he performed a few of his popular songs, despite looking frail and weak.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised.
