JOBURG PULLS OUT ALL STOPS FOR SOWETO MARATHON

03 November 2017

City of Johannesburg is pulling out all stops to ensure the safety and comfort of runners at the Soweto Marathon on Sunday 5 November.

JMPD officers will be out in full force to control traffic, giving runners a free pass on the route for the day. There will be a lead vehicle ahead of the front runners and a Metro Police clearing vehicle sweeping the route. The City of Johannesburg is proud to be amongst the sponsors of the annual Old Mutual Soweto Marathon 2017.

Motorists are advised to take note of road closures specified on the table below and to use alternative routes. Spectators and drivers are reminded to obey marshals and officials when supporting runners.

The Joburg Market will be giving out fruits to replenish the energy levels of runners. Other City entities will provide support and entertainment at water points to spur the runners on.

Dubbed the People's Race, the Soweto Marathon is a premier event on the running calendar and a major test of character for runners as they approach the close of the running season.

An expected 25 000 runners will pass six significant heritage sites on the marathon route.

This flagship event navigates through the historical land marks in Soweto with 25 000 runners participating. It is a platform to showcase township tourism of Soweto and the city's infrastructure to host big events.
