Joburg scoops top SAPI planning award

The City of Johannesburg recently added another feather to its cap when it scooped a South African Planning Institute (SAPI) award for its Spatial Planning Framework 2040.

 

The City shared the municipal category of this year’s SAPI Planning Awards with the City of Ekurhuleni, which was recognised for its Aerotropolis project.

Johannesburg’s latest SAPI award is in recognition of its “exemplary formulation and implementation” of the following plans:

  • Integrated Development;

  • Spatial Development;

  • District Growth and Development;

  • Human Settlements; and

  • Transport.

The prestigious 2016 SAPI award comes just a week after the City was lauded by the World Bank and the Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility (PPIAF) for the way in which it deals with the challenges of decline and urban decay.

The SAPI Awards were established in 2008 to reflect on and recognise the valuable contributions that individuals and organisations make to inspire their continued involvement and those of others and to promote the key role of the planning profession in public life.

The latest awards are among a host of national and international accolades the City has amassed over the past two years. A few weeks ago Johannesburg was named in the 2016 Women Entrepreneur Cities Index among the top 25 cities in the world where women entrepreneurs thrive.

Some of the accolades the City has received include:

  • The first and only African city to win the C40 Cities Award for an innovative strategy to mitigate climate change (2015);

  • The second-most African inspiring city in the world, behind Hong Kong (2015);

  • Winner of the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Destination Award (2014 and 2015);

  • The most-visited city in Africa for two consecutive years, according to the MasterCard Global Cities Index (2013 and 2014);

  • The coolest city south of the Equator, according to GQ magazine (2015);

  • Maboneng Precinct named one of the world's coolest tourist attractions by Travelandleisure.com (2015); and

  • Winner of the Department of Agriculture’s Arbor City Award (2015).
