Joburg starts Transport Month in style

The City kicked off Transport Month on Tuesday, 03 October 2017, by launching the rehabilitated section of the M1 at Parktown including the new Oxford and Federation bridges.
It forms part of a series of activities to be held throughout October as part of celebrating National Transport Month. The activities aims to provide all residents with information to empower them about public transport and road safety while highlighting the importance of public transport.
The City of Johannesburg will also highlight the progress made on the infrastructure development in respect of the freeway system and public transport service delivery within the City.
There will be interactions with commuters, public transport operators and drivers including from learner transport, involving the City leadership, officials and other stakeholders.
“The M1 launch highlighted the role of roads in supporting economic growth and infrastructure development,” said Cllr Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in the City of Johannesburg.
“We urge all residents of Johannesburg to take heed of the campaign messages and rally behind the transformation of society through the delivery of safe and reliable public transport,” emphasized Cllr Makhuba.
The City of Johannesburg Transport Month activities will take place as follows:
1. Opening of Oxford Bridge on Tuesday, 03 October 2017.
2. 03 October 2017, the City hosted a Learner Transport Indaba to strengthen a partnership with scholar transport operators and other stakeholders to promote safety and sustainability.
3. Distribution of the bicycles to the learners and other commuters in Alexandra to enable them to travel more safely and speedily on Thursday, 05 October 2017.
4. On Tuesday, 10 October 2017, the City will host a Senior Citizens Appreciation Day to give 50 senior citizens an opportunity to experience public transport by taking Metrobus and Gautrain to Sandton.
5. On Thursday, 12 October 2017, there will be an interaction with commuters at Ghandi Square and visit Metrobus’ Milpark Depot include gas refuel stations and buses technical section.
6. On Saturday, 14 October 2017, a Drivers’ Appreciation Day will be held to appreciate 100 public transport drivers and launch an advanced driver training course programme for public transport drivers.
7. On Friday, 20 October 2017, the City will hosts a Kasi-to-Kasi Public Transport tour where teams from different organisations will take on an adventure using public transport like taxis, metered taxis, train, tuk-tuk and bus to promote the public transport.
8. On Saturday, 21 October 2017, the City in partnership with the Meadowlands community will host a streets alive road safety prayer event.
9. On 23 - 27 October 2017, the City and other stakeholders will host a career exhibition at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg, to expose learners to career opportunities within the transport sector.
10. On Sunday, 29 October 2017, the City and its partners will host a Freedom Ride starting from Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein cycle through Vilakazi Street in Soweto and return along Soweto Highway promote cycling as a sport and other mode of transport.
The City of Joburg will also start the process of public participation in respect of the naming of new Rea Vaya 1C stations, bridge and interchange that are being currently built between Hillbrow, Alexandra and Sandton. For more details on the names visit: www.reavaya.org.za
