Joburg Water donates diapers for Sanitation Week
17 May 2016
Joburg Water, the City of Johannesburg’s water and sanitation provision entity, is donating more than one million diapers to the elderly throughout the city as part of its celebration of National Sanitation Week, which started on Monday May 16.
National Sanitation Week is an annual event observed by the Department of Water and Sanitation and local government to encourage municipalities and communities to prioritise sanitation, health and hygiene. The campaign means that Joburg Water must reach as many people as possible within a short space of time – from Monday May 16 to Friday May 20 – to make a donation.
Several shopping malls have been approached to serve as drop-off points and Joburg Water has initiated a social media campaign through its #1millliondiapers4dignity to encourage residents to donate and help to enhance the dignity of the elderly. The diapers will be distributed via 11 old age homes throughout the city.
Joburg Water Managing Director Lungile Dhlamini has called on Johannesburg residents to come on board.
“We have already received support from various shopping malls to exhibit at their centres, create awareness and also serve as drop-off points for those community members wishing to support this initiative. Furthermore, we are going to use our offices and the social media, through our #1millliondiapers4dignity, to encourage people to donate,” Dhlamini said.
The beneficiaries include the Andries Meyer Old Age Home in Eldorado Park; Frederic Place in Coronationville; Evalon House in Jeppestown; Nazareth House in Yeoville; Tswelopele Frail Centre in the Johannesburg inner city; Banakekeleni Hospice in Alexandra; Ahanang Parish-Based Care and Mamohau Motshehetsi Care Support, both in Soweto; Chinese Old Aged Home in Belgravia; Jafta Village in Johannesburg South and Floroma Old Aged Home in Roodepoort.
Joburg Water’s National Sanitation Week objectives are to:
-
Support the national initiative in raising the profile of sanitation;
-
Highlight the importance of looking after sanitation facilities;
-
Ensure that communities are well informed of the need to practise good hygiene; and
-
Invest in a course that will make an impact on sectors that are not always given priority.
