Joburg Zoo hosts Kaya FM’s Family Day

Hundreds of Afropolitans left church early yesterday – or didn’t go at all – as they rushed to the Joburg Zoo to take part in Kaya FM’s Family Day.
 

The families decked out picnic baskets on the zoo’s lawn and tucked into home-cooked food such as idombolo (dumpling), drumsticks, and custard and jelly.

No booze was allowed and everyone was on their best behaviour.
 

The Family Day, which started at 10am and finished at 5pm, saw some of Kaya FM’s DJs, such as Mo-G, work some magic on the decks to the delight of the massive crowd. Tickets cost R65 for adults and R40 for children.

The afternoon rain did not dampen the spirits of the revellers.
 

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Environment Clr Matshidiso Mfikoe said the City of Johannesburg was proud to be associated with an event that brought families together.

“People are always in a rush to make ends meet. We sometimes neglect those who are closest to our hearts. The Kaya Family Day offers one an ideal opportunity to unwind, spend time with family and make new friends in a tranquil environment,” she said.

There was entertainment galore for kiddies, such as human foosball, sack and egg and spoon races, and face painting. There were prizes, too, ranging from magnetic photo frames to mini-cricket giveaways.

The adults were not left out in the fun, either. Thebe and @Soul got the people jumping out of their camp chairs, gyrating to the beat and generally making merry as the animals looked on in shock (LOL).

Kaya FM’s Managing Director, Greg Maloka, said: The Kaya FM Family Day was conceived five years ago to bring families together and celebrate the lives of our loved ones. One of the station’s values is the establishment of strong families among Afropolitans.

“Family Day delivers an interactive environment among parents and kids, which encourages development and education through play and fun. It’s also an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals in a relaxed environment while enjoying good music and good friends and mingle with Kaya FM’s personalities,” he said.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, said scores of officers managed traffic around the zoo to ensure the safety of hundreds of Joburgers who attended Family Day.
