Jozi hosts another major global event

30 September 2015

The attention of the global public relations and communications industry will turn to Johannesburg this coming weekend when the city hosts the International Public Relations Association’s World Congress for the first time.

The Johannesburg Convention Bureau, a division of Joburg Tourism, has partnered with the Public Relations Institute of South Africa to host the annual event at the Sandton Convention Centre from Sunday September 27 to Tuesday September 29.

Attended by about 800 delegates, speakers and participants from all around the world every year, the three-day congress is a major highlight on the public relations profession’s global calendar, providing vast networking opportunities and creating a platform for intellectual discourse.

Johannesburg was awarded the privilege to host this year’s congress after a tough international bidding process in 2013.

“Johannesburg has a proven track record, capacity and capability of hosting international events of this nature. Hosting a gathering of global public relations specialists will have enormous benefits for Johannesburg,” says Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development Cllr Ruby Mathang. Held under the theme “Leadership in Today’s Communication – The Way to Trust,” this year’s congress will be addressed by, among others, IPRA President Dr Amybel Sanchez.

Johnny Clegg, a South African musical legend, will deliver the keynote address.

The congress will look into issues such as reputations and trust, leadership in the new era, brand management in the non-profit sector and brand journalism. This is the first time IPRA holds its congress in South Africa since its inception 60 years ago.

The congress is one of the biggest events to be held in Johannesburg between now and the end of the years. The others include the EcoMobility World Festival in October and AfriCities Summit in November and December. For all the details, click onto www.ipra.org/congress.
