Jozi hosts duathlon for ecomobility

14 August 2015

The City of Johannesburg will, in partnership with leading health group Discovery, stage the first-ever South African urban duathlon in Sandton on October 24 and 25.

On both days, residents of Johannesburg will take to the streets in a run-cycle-run challenge, dubbed Discovery Duathlon Sandton, in support of the EcoMobility World Festival. The festival, which will be held from 1-31 October, and duathlon will form party of the City’s Transport Month activities.

But more than anything, the duathlon is an effort by the City and Discovery aimed at encouraging residents to engage in physical activity to improve their health and protect their lives. Launching the duathlon on Thursday August 13, Executive Mayor Parks Tau urged Johannesburg residents to come out in droves to reclaim the streets by taking part in the challenge.

“The time has come for those who live, work and play in the city to get outside to walk, cycle and enjoy the streets,” he said.

He said by giving preference to public transport, cycling and walking during Transport Month, the benefits of embracing alternative modes of transport would be highlighted.

“The reality is that if we fail to intervene and change our behaviour – with the current levels of congestion in the city – key business areas like Sandton will remain at risk of becoming giant parking lots,” he warned.

Clr Tau had earlier completed a 3km-leg of a mini-dualthon relay.

Discovery Group Executive Director Barry Swatzberg said in line with the Mayor’s vision of making the people of Johannesburg healthier, Discovery had a unique obligation to build programmes that supported them.

“We are driven to get people moving and are very excited to host the first Discovery Duathlon Sandton,” he said.

The EcoMobility World Festival highlights the benefits of alternative modes of transport, including public transport, walking and cycling, The Discovery Duathlon Sandton is open to athletes of different fitness levels, families and people of all ages.
