Jozi Mayor meets Mos Def

22 October 2015

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Councillor Mpho Parks Tau met international hip hop star, actor, comedian and activist Yisiin Bey, popularly known as Mos Def, in Sandton last night (Wednesday October 21) to discuss ways in which youth upliftment and empowerment programmes in Johannesburg could be maximised.

The programmes that came under discussion included Jozi@Work, Vulindlel’ eJozi, Digital Ambassadors and Massive Open Online Courses.

The meeting was also attended by several local hip hop artists, including Amukelani “Amu” Tshawane, who worked on the popular Vulindlel’ eJozi track.

They discussed how best to impart and share their skills to benefit the next generation.

Mos Def pledged his support for the arts.

Chauke said the talks were positive and fruitful.

She said more meetings to discuss the way forward and the nature of the projects and partnerships were on the cards.

Mos Def, born Dante Terrell Smith, moved to South Africa from the United States in May 2013.

He lived in Cape Town for two years before recently moving to Johannesburg.
