Jozi on filmmaking map again thanks to Ayanda

12 October 2015

Johannesburg’s unique urban character is once again being showcased on the silver screen in the city’s latest film, Ayanda.

Shot on location in Yeoville, a fast-paced and bubbling cultural melting pot on the eastern side of the Johannesburg inner city, Ayanda is the latest film by award-winning film director Sara Blecher.

Following its local premier on October 2, Ayanda has received rave reviews from filmgoers for its authentic and energetic local flavour, storytelling and performances.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development Cllr Ruby Mathang says Ayanda is the latest in a series of local and international films that feature or were filmed in Johannesburg, including Tell Me Sweet Something, The Bang Bang Club, District 9, Tsotsi, Invictus and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

“Johannesburg is a premier global, all-year round business, filming and leisure destination for local, national and international audiences. It is a world-class African city offering world-class facilities and skills.

“As the City we have several comprehensive promotional platforms in place, including a database of international producers to ensure the scope of our offerings is as varied as possible,” says MMC Mathang.

With first-rate infrastructure and a myriad of fascinating locations, Johannesburg’s appeal as a film destination is undeniable.

“Moreover, it’s also an affordable destination with state-of-the-art production facilities, skilled and experienced film crews, a burgeoning labour force as well as key support logistics and services,” he says.

Ayanda captures the eclectic and multi-faceted essence of urban South African youth culture. It tells the story of a young and fiery woman, Ayanda – played by Fulu Mugiovhani – who is dealing with the pain and heartache of losing her father and upholding his legacy. With her talent of restoring neglected pieces of furniture and “bringing them back to love,” Ayanda pours her efforts into trying to prevent her late father’s vehicle repair shop from being sold.

The film stars Nigerian actor OC Ukeje, winner of the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Actor; Jafta Mamabolo; Nthati Moshesh; Kenneth Nkosi; Sihle Xaba and Vanessa Cooke.

Ayanda has won the Special Jury Prize at the prestigious Los Angeles Film Festival following its screening in the World Fiction Competition in June.

It also featured as the opening night film at the recent 36th Durban International Film Festival, which took place in July.
