Jozi@Work gives unemployed residents a welcome respite

Several unemployed Soweto residents are to get much-needed relief after Jozi@Work announced three work packages worth a total of R123 000 to maintain three public clinics over a period of three months.

 

The packages were announced at three separate briefing sessions held at the three Region D clinics on Wednesday 
February 15.

Jozi@Work will soon cease to exist in its current form after Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba scrapped the programme following the detection of corrupt practices.

The Mayor said the programme would be replaced with a new empowerment initiative within the next few months. The work packages announced on Wednesday are among the last ones to be offered to co-operatives and small township businesses under Jozi@Work.

The three healthcare facilities that are to undergo a makeover under this project from 1 March 2017 to 31 May 2017 are Green Village Clinic, Mofolo South Clinic and Orlando West Clinic. The work includes the de-weeding of flower beds, sweeping of pavements, removal of tree roots, chemical treatment of tree trunks, beatification of flower beds and planting of grass.

Eddie Campbell, the City’s Region D Health Manager, said of the R123 000 on the table, R48 000 had been allocated to Mofolo South Clinic, R45 000 to Green Village Clinic and R30 000 to Orlando West Clinic, the smallest of the three.

“The clinics were measured in terms of square metres in order to allocate the appropriate amount for each of them. The amounts were also determined by the bill of quantities to be used during the project,” said Campbell.

He said only one co-operative would be appointed for each clinic. Co-operatives are each expected to hire five employees to provide the services during this period.

“The co-operatives are expected to have their own tools as well as all the equipment that will be needed for this project,” Campbell added.

“We want our communities to access services from clean environments. The City of Johannesburg has an obligation to ensure that its facilities are in good condition,” he said.

The closing date for the submission of expression of interest forms is Thursday February 24.
