JRA spruces up Region A streets

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) will, in the current financial year, spend a significant portion of Region A’s R24-million maintenance budget on ensuring that street names in its various suburbs, townships and commercial areas are clear and visible.

 

JRA’s Acting Managing Director, Mpho Kau, says the agency has a responsibility to ensure that residents find their way around their neighbourhoods easily. “Many of the street names in our areas are not visibly displayed. That is why we are painting or repainting the street names on the kerbing where necessary,” says Kau.

 

JRA has already completed the repainting of street names in areas such as Lonehill and Sunninghill in the past financial year.

 

Some of Region A’s areas that will benefit from this drive in the 2015-2016 financial year are Rabie Ridge, Ebony, Ivory Park and Kaalfontein. Region A includes urban centres such as Dainfern, Farmall and Chartwell and a number of informal settlements, with robust commercial activity located around Lanseria and Grand Central airports and in the Midrand CBD. Kau also says the entity will invest at least R41-million of its capital expenditure budget in the current financial year in road reconstruction projects, improvement of the general state of roads in highly populated areas as well as gravel roads in agricultural areas.

 

Some of the approved projects include:

  • Improvement of the general state of side walks in Diepsloot’s wards 77 and 95 (R6-million);

  • Road reconstruction (R15-million) in Ivory Park;

  • Conversion of open stormwater channels into underground systems in Ivory Park (R10-million);

  • Erosion protection in the Fourways area;

  • Upgrading of gravel roads and stormwater drainage systems in Kaalfontein (R3-million); and

  • Pedestrian Bridges planning in Ivory Park and Diepsloot (R1-million each)

 

The projects are expected to bolster economic activity as locals will be employed as workers and sub-contractors. Building on the successes of the past financial year, JRA is continuing work on the R10-million three-year maintenance and rehabilitation of the Le Roux Avenue widening in Ward 112 (phase 1 has already been completed with construction of the bridge over the N1), and on the R5-million Gravel Roads reconstruction programme in agricultural holdings, which was launched in 2014 and is currently 43% complete.

 

The agency also plans to finalise the R25-million Roads Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Programme (currently 85% complete) and the comprehensive roads Resurfacing Programme in 12 wards. JRA’s Acting Managing Director, Mpho Kau, has urged members of the public to bear with the agency during the construction and rehabilitation of roads in the region which, he says, will help to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow in the region. The projected total expenditure for these projects over three years (from 2014 to 2016) – is R150-million.
