Ladysmith Black Mambazo to captivate Jozi audiences

Grammy Award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo will on two nights this weekend beguile audiences at the popular Joburg Theatre as part of the City of Johannesburg’s three-week-long Arts Alive International Arts Festival. 

 

The Night of the Legends Concert celebrates this iconic choral ensemble’s 52nd anniversary and provides music lovers with an unforgettable and nostalgic journey that propelled the group to local and international stardom and earned it phenomenal success.  The two never-to-be-missed performances take an intimate look at the more than five decades of the inimitable isicathamiya and imbube outfit’s musical excellence.

 

The group, founded by music icon Joseph Shabalala in 1964, is expected to take audiences down memory lane with several of its distinguishable hits such “Nomathemba”, “Ofananaye”, “Lelilungelo” as well as “Homeless” and “Diamonds on The Soles of Her Shoes”, two great collaborations with international music genius Paul Simon.

 

Ladysmith Black Mambazo has, through its unique brand of music, become one of South Africa’s leading musical ambassadors.

Since the release of its first album in 1973, it has produced more than 30 albums and won four Grammy Awards, three South African Music Awards and two Drama Desk Awards.

 

The group has also collaborated with several international icons including Simon, the late Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Salif Keita, Oliver Mtukudzi and local artists such as PJ Powers, The Soil, MiCasa, Zahara and many others.  

 

This weekend’s shows will be held on Saturday September 10 at 7pm and Sunday September 11 at 3pm on The Mandela’s stage.  Tickets go for between R155 and R250.
