Learners put in touch with their futures at career expo

Grade 12 learners in Soweto were given the opportunity to decide on their future when the City of Johannesburg hosted a Career Expo at the Bramfischerville Community Hall in Region C on Friday February 24.

 

Scores of learners from schools in Bramfischerville and surrounding areas attended the exhibition that showcased careers in emergency management services, nursing, fire-fighting and law enforcement, to mention a few.
Various colleges in and around Johannesburg exhibited at the event.

The expo also attracted adults, like community member Ivy Seleka, who found out about it through her Grade 10 son. “My son told me about it and I came here to get information because I’m interested in studying educare,” said Seleka.

She said the information she received was “very useful”. “I now know how much the course will cost and its duration,” she said.

Grade 12 learners from Siyabonga Secondary School were addressed by the nursing staff from Dobsonville Clinic, who shared information about how to go about applying for a nursing course and what the various nursing disciplines entailed.

Matric learner Kgatliso Yawa, 18, said the expo was highly informative. “We were equipped with information regarding different courses. This will go a long way in helping us choose the right career,” said Yawa.

She said she wanted to study teaching after passing her matric.

Patricia Mathe of the City of Johannesburg’s Library and Information Services said the City hosted two career exhibitions a year. She said the first targeted Grade 12 learners, whereas the second focused on those in Grade 9.

“The one earmarked for Grade 9 learners is held in September. The aim is to help them choose the correct subjects in Grade 10,” said Mathe.

She said it was important that young people took up careers that would ensure they became active participants in the country’s economy.

It was important that they ventured into marketable careers as this would reduce unemployment among graduates.

“We hold career workshops regularly in schools throughout the city to prepare young people who are still in school to make the correct career choices. This is about educating and imparting knowledge to the youth,” said Mathe.
