Let us collect your bulk waste – Pikitup

25 January 2016

Do you have an old and unused refrigerator in your garden that you want to get rid of but don’t have the wherewithal to do so?

If that is the case, don’t sweat. Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity, can dispose of any unwieldy or bulky items that you might have on your property – such as old mattresses, electric stoves, computers, humidifiers, ovens and electric stoves – for free, and without any hassles, to keep the city clean and prevent the scourge of illegal dumping.

“It’s quite simple,” said Pikitup Managing Director Amanda Nair during an interview on SABC’s Morning Live programme on Monday January 25.
All what Johannesburg residents have to do is to call their nearest Pikitup depot and provide details of the bulky waste the need collected.

“What we then do is schedule a service for that particular customer. There's a service programme in place. If residents go to www.pikitup.co.za they'll be able to see the dates and the weekly collections,” Nair said.

She told Morning Live anchor Leanne Manas that the programme had seen the disposal of more than 4 000 tons of bulk waste since it was introduced in March 2015.

She appealed to residents not to leave the items to be disposed of on the sidewalk ahead of collection day.

“Make sure it’s out there on collection day and we’ll come past and collect it,” she said.

Nair said these bulky waste items were not taken the landfill site but to a recycling or buyback centre.

“These items [might be] disposable [for some] but there are many people who can put them to good use,” she said.

Hazardous waste, like discarded paint tins, as well as explosives or flammable materials are not included among items that are disposed of in this way.

When do Collections take place?
