Mayor hands out title deeds to Lehae residents

11 December 2015

The City of Johannesburg effectively and formally ceded ownership of 1 307 properties in Lehae, south of Johannesburg, when Executive Mayor, Councillor Parks Tau handed out title deeds to their owners at the Zakariyya Park Community Hall on Thursday December 10.

Lehae is one of the largest integrated residential development projects the City has undertaken in recent times to address the housing shortage.

The development of Lehae was approved by council in 2005 to cater for housing beneficiaries from areas such as Dlamini, Eikenhof, Old Vista, Mshenguville, Orlando East, Orlando Park, St Mary’s, Kapok and Thembelihle. The first phase of the development, Lehae Proper, was completed in 2006. The second phase, Lehae Extension 1, commenced in 2010. A total of 1 413 houses have so far been built in the area.

On completion, the development will yield a total of 5 147 housing units, consisting of 2 023 fully subsidised units (RDPs), 1 099 bonded units and 2 025 high-density housing units. Last month the City undertook a title deeds verification process in Lehae, which is in Region G, to determine whether the properties were still being occupied by their rightful owners. The results showed that 1 307 homeowners were “ready to be issued” with title deeds, the Mayor said.

“A title deed is one of the most important documents one can ever possess. It does not only give one proof of ownership, or an address, but one can also be used to facilitate market and financial transactions,” said Executive Mayor Tau.

The ceremony was also attended by Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing Cllr Dan Bovu, local councillors and other community leaders.
