Mayor Mashaba hands out houses in Lufhereng

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba put a smile on Lindiwe Ndlovu’s face when he handed her a title deed and keys to her new house in Lufhereng, west of Johannesburg, on Thursday October 13.

 

Ndlovu is one of 342 residents of the new integrated township development who received title deeds to their new houses today (13 October).

Mayor Mashaba is expected to hand over a total of 2 000 title deeds to Johannesburg homeowners before the end of 2016.

Speaking shortly after viewing the interior of her new four-roomed home, a tearful Ndlovu, who volunteers at a local non-governmental organisation, said she did not have the right words to describe her elation.

“This is the happiest day of my life. I have been waiting for my house for years,” said the 47-year-old mother of two as she was fighting back tears.

She said she was grateful to the City of Johannesburg for making her dream come true and giving her family a place to call home.

“Even if I die tomorrow, I will do so in peace knowing that my children have a home and no one is going to evict them from it before they will have proper documentation,” said Ndlovu, who used to share a small rented room with her children.

“With this house, I will enjoy my privacy. It is such a beautiful house. It is the best gift that anyone has ever given me,” said Ndlovu.

After completion of Phase 1 of the Lufhereng integrated housing development, the City registered and transferred 550 fully subsidised units to beneficiaries. The City is now in the process of completing the construction a further 112 fully subsidised units and 30 units for military veterans in Lufhereng Ext 1. This will be followed by the construction of a further 1 250 units in Extensions 5 and 6.

A group of protesters disrupted today’s (13 October) handover proceedings, leading to Mayor Mashaba leaving the ceremony before delivering his address.
