Mayor Tau to account to residents in term report

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Parks Tau will tomorrow, Wednesday July 6, deliver his end-of-term report in which he will reflect on the performance of his administration over the past five years.
The report is expected to revolve around the City’s guiding document – the Growth and Development Strategy 2040 (GDS 2040) – and track the successes and achievements the administration has gained in pursuit of the realisation of this vision, and the challenges and threats it has encountered along the way since the beginning of the municipal term in May 2011.
The report, to be tabled at the Wanderers Stadium in Illovo, covers the period in between two local government elections and is in preparation for the political leadership that will assume office after the 3 August 2016 municipal elections. Some of the major issues expected to feature prominently in the report include the progress the City has made during in the past five years in dismantling apartheid and creating new, united, non-racial and integrated communities through its Corridors of Freedom programme.
Coming as it does on the 40th anniversary of the June 16 1976 Soweto student uprising, Mayor Tau’s report is also expected to reflect on the achievements the City has made to empower the youth through programmes such as Vulindlel’eJozi, Jozi@Work, Massive Open Online Varsity (MOOV), Digital Ambassadors, #Hack.Jozi Challenge and Jozi My Beginning Innovation fund.
It was during this term of office that the City embarked on an unprecedented R100-billion infrastructure investment programme to tackle infrastructure backlogs and create a new and integrated city.
The Mayor will give a picture of how the 10-year investment programme has begun to change the face and character of the city and enhance the quality of life of its residents.
He is also expected to spell out how the City has during this term of office dealt with challenges such as poverty, housing backlogs, electrification of informal settlements, traffic congestion and crime, as well as initiatives it has embarked on to empower SMMEs and entrepreneurs and boost tourism.
The report will be broadcast on e.tv’s Sunrise channel 194 on DStv and Soweto TV channel 251 on DStv. Residents of the City of Johannesburg can also tune in on Alex FM 89.1, Eastwave FM 92.2, Eldos FM 87.6, Jozi FM 105 105.8, UJ FM 95.4 and Radio Islam 1548 AM to follow proceedings.
This term also saw the City’s international profile soar to new levels, with Mayor Tau and some members of his executive, including Finance MMC Geoffrey Makhubo and Health and Social Development MMC Nonceba Molwele, assuming leading roles in global and continental organisations.
Over and above being showered with international accolades, the City hosted several major international events, including the One Young World Summit, C40 Climate Change Summit, Ecomobility World Festival and Africities Summit.
Mayor Tau will also spell out plans for the future in the end-of-term report.
