Mayor to lead City’s clean-up blitz at Avalon Precinct
29 January 2018
The Avalon Precinct, which forms part of Avalon Cemetery and the historical Chiawelo Koppie, will receive a massive clean-up on Tuesday, 30 January 2018.
The Executive Mayor in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Herman Mashaba, and the Member of the Mayoral Committee in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Nonhlanhla Sifumba, City Parks and Zoo, Working with Water, Pikitup, JRA and JMPD will all get their hands dirty on Tuesday at 08:30am.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo has committed to tackling peak seasonal demands by running mega blitz operations in the City, which transform areas of concern into liveable spaces.
The koppie is one of the highest points in Soweto. Previously a rendezvous for political discussions in the apartheid era, the koppie plays is a historical site for many in that community and was once visited by the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan.
The team will rid the koppie of alien invasive plants and the removal of criminal activities in and around the precinct and combat illegal substance abuse in the area. Horticultural maintenance to trees, grass and pavements leading to Avalon cemetery will also be cleaned.
About 150 City of Joburg employees and Expanded Public Works Programme workers will cut the long grass, prune trees, pick up litter and remove illegal dumping.
