Mayor unveils R260m Lufhereng Substation

Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Parks Tau officially opened the R260-million Lufhereng Substation on Wednesday July 26.

 

The launch of the substation – commissioned by City Power, the City of Johannesburg’s electricity utility – took place on the same day that Mayor Tau unveiled the second phase of the massive Lufhereng Human Settlement Development.

The substation will supply power to Lufhereng – which on completion in 2023 will have more than 22 000 housing units – as well as the neighbouring Slovoville.

City Power acting Managing Director Mdu Nzimande said the substation’s generation capacity of 125MVA would enable the power utility to supply more than 22 500 homes and businesses with electricity.

“We’ve four big transformers here. Out of those transformers, two would be able to supply power to a place as big as Randfontein. We will definitely pace housing with development. We are proud of what has been achieved here in terms of employment. I can report that 120 people were hired. Two local companies were subcontractors. We have definitely created jobs here,” said Nzimande.

The substation has been subdivided to provide for Eskom and City Power works. The project will be phased in over eight to 10 years.
