02 November 2015
About R2-million was raised during this year’s Mayoral Charity Golf Day, with the funds going to the South African National Defence Force Education Trust Fund.
The golf day, hosted by Johannesburg Executive Mayor Councillor Parks Tau at the Modderfontein Golf Club, was the 12th edition of the event since its inception in 2004.
The event has raised a total of R16-million over the past 12 years.
Its beneficiaries over the years included hospices, home-based caregivers, support groups focusing on people affected by HIV-AIDS, vulnerable groups, child-headed households and destitute families. Some of the personalities who took part in this year’s edition were Chief of the SANDF General Solly Shoke, retired SANDF General Siphiwe Nyanda, West Rand Mayor Cllr Mpho Nawa and ANC veteran and Rivonia Trialist Andrew Mlangeni.
Mayor Tau said the City of Johannesburg had decided to donate the funds to the SANDF Education Trust – for the second year running – to help educate children of foot soldiers who died in the Central African Republic in 2013 while defending the country and its borders. The Mayor said the soldiers had sacrificed their lives to protect South Africa and SADC member states.
He said the soldiers knew that this was not just an ordinary job but a very important one. “They go all out to defend their country and SADC countries to make sure that you and I are safe and there is no threat of invasion by our enemies. The City saw it fit to help the children whose fathers and mothers died while protecting this country. This is our way of saying thank you for your bravery; your efforts were not in vain,” Mayor Tau said.
Forty-one teams of four took part in the golf day.The first prize was won by Mpho Moerane, Moshe More, Ismael Variawa and Oupa Seabi.
The second prize went to Stephen Nale, Peter Ntsoko, Pat Nyathi and Mokena.Edwin Bogopa, Zaid Glennistor, China Mashinini and Bonang Moletsane won the third prize.
