Military Tattoo will blow you away
08 September 2016
If you think soldiers are prepared to lose life or limb to protect South Africa, you are partly correct. They also play the coolest music and can get the crowd on its feet dancing the night away.
But if you don’t believe the very same soldiers can play mind-blowing music, then make your way to the Apartheid Museum for a historic show of the Military Tattoo.
For the first time, the City of Johannesburg is hosting the Johannesburg Military Tattoo at the Apartheid Museum in Gold Reef City, south of Johannesburg, from 7 to 10 September 2016.
If Wednesday night’s performance is anything to go by, audiences are in for a treat as different bands linked to the Military Tattoo entertained through precision drilling, traditional and gumboot dancing and top drawer blowing of the bagpipes to give the Scots a run for the money.
Be prepared for simulated explosions that shake the earth and rapid fire during mock attacks. There is also trip down memory lane as bands from the Barnato High School and nine military bands ranging from the army, health services, navy and air force do cover versions of Caiphus Semenya’s “Ndiphendule” and Platform One’s “Amavolovolo”. Wednesday night’s audience included City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba and Speaker Councillor Vasco da Gama.
“The Apartheid Museum at Gold Reef City is a fitting venue for the City’s first hosting of the Military Tattoo. We trust that this will also shine the spotlight on the quality and diversity of tourism and leisure destinations within our City and encourage visitors to stay longer and explore the best that Joburg can offer,” said Mayor Mashaba.
Tickets are available at Computicket and the Military Tattoo run until Saturday, 10 September.
