MMC Peetz extends helping hand to Soweto’s SMMEs

28 March 2017

City of Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development Cllr Sharon Peetz committed herself to looking into challenges brought to her attention during her tour of business hubs in Soweto, Region D, on Monday March 27.

Speaking at the end of the day-long tour at Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, MMC Peetz said her department would ensure that necessary interventions were effected “as a matter of urgency” to put small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) on a growth path.

The tour of the Soweto Empowerment Zone in Diepkloof, Freedom Square in Kliptown, Old Vista Incubation Centre in Dlamini, Orlando West Industrial Zone and Vilakazi Street, took place as the City seeks to expand the Johannesburg economy by at least 5% and reduce unemployment by 6% before the end of the current municipal term in 2021.

MMC Peetz said the tour was important because her department was passionate about economic development in all the City’s seven regions. She has previously visited business hubs in regions A and E.

Cllr Peetz was accompanied on the Region D tour by officials from the City’s Economic Development Department and Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM). The purpose of the tour was to look at economic activities on the ground, identity challenges and engage entrepreneurs.
