MMC Vondo officially unveils a world-class park

Hundreds of Ivory Park residents turned up in great numbers to witness the official opening of phase 2 of the R4 million state-of-the-arts and international award-winning Ivory Park Regional Park on Friday.

 

Before officially handing over the new facilities to the public, Johannesburg Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Clr Chris Vondo was given a tour of the park, which in 2007 won gold in the United Nations' International Awards for Liveable Communities.

 

Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo Managing Director Bulemo Nelana said a park was more than merely a place for children to escape to but a place that could serve as "a meeting point for the whole community to engage in all social issues that confront it".

 

Nelana thanked the City's employees and the Capital Infrastructure Development Department for their commitment and contribution to the delivery of "this world-class project".

 

"We have a moral responsibility to the residents of Joburg to better their lives and tomorrow will be a better day in Ivory Park, thanks to you," Nelana said.

 

He appealed to the community to take pride in and care for the new facility.

 

Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley said the newly upgraded park, designed to offer a tranquil retreat complemented by unique outdoor nodes to enable active living, would serve as a regional playground for the residents of Ivory Park and surrounding areas.

 

The Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Community Development, Councillor, Chris Vondo said, "The park is an exciting venture for the community. It also brings with it a positive lifestyle as it will encourage healthy living through exercise and a clean place for children to play".

 

The new-look park boasts free-to-use outdoor gyms, the 16th set erected in Johannesburg.

 

It also consists of a synthetic five-a-side enclosed soccer pitch, new generation play equipment with rubberised surfaces, a refurbished ablution facility, irrigation facilities, water features and landscaped lawns with more than 30 trees.

The park includes picnic sites, braai areas, flower beds, netball courts and paved pathways.
