More hop on Joburg’s A Re Sebetseng bus

23 November 2017

An increasing number of corporates and individuals are coming onboard and pledging their support for A Re Sebetseng, the City of Joburg’s monthly clean-up campaign.

This follows the City of Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, welcoming more companies to the campaign during the third pledge signing at the Joburg Zoo on Thursday, 23 November 2017.

A Re Sebetseng encourages Johannesburg residents to take care of the environment. It also seeks to promote a culture of reducing, re-using and recycling our waste to ensure Joburg becomes one of the cleanest cities in Africa.

“Together we can work towards the best case scenario - a clean and beautiful city,” said Mayor Mashaba during today’s pledge-signing ceremony.

One of the companies that has pledged, Coca Cola, has committed to getting involved with young people, especially in schools, in keeping their surroundings clean.

Pharmaceutical company Adcock Ingram has pledged to adopt a park. It has also promised to have dedicated people cleaning and caring for the parks. The company will also look into creating bricks from ashes, adopting schools to create play grounds and recycling plastics and creating shoe soles.

Pikitup board chairperson Bhekisisa Shongwe said Joburg residents needed to invest in changing the ways in which they looked at waste. “To be a working city, we need to be a clean city,” he said.

The third installment of the signing of the pledge included the waste industry: Coca Cola; Total; Joburg CID Forum; The Miss Earth SA Foundation; Kobus Otto & Associates; Delta Bec; Tedcor; Enviroserv; Mojanation; Mpact; Interwaste; Remade; Metal & Papers; Plastics SA; Petco; Polyco; Traffic Net; Phambili Services; Averda SA; Carrus; Avis; TFM Industries; Adcock Ingam; Waohost; The Waste Group; and Boitumelong.

“Together, the City and businesses can create a city we can be proud of; together we can find innovative, mutually beneficial ways of ensuring we live, work, and play in a clean Johannesburg,” said Mayor Mashaba.

A Re Sebetseng campaign takes place every last Saturday of the month for 2017 and going forward in 2018 it will be on the third Saturday of every month. It is facilitated by Pikitup, but it is the responsibility of all councillors, city departments and regional offices to drive the programme.

Plastic bags and gloves are distributed at walk-in centres, clinics, libraries, and participating businesses. Filled bags are collected on the same day by Pikitup.
