More Jozi@Work opportunities for co-operatives

Co-operatives and small township businesses in the City of Johannesburg’s Region B were offered more jobs and empowerment opportunities when Johannesburg Water, a City of Johannesburg water and sanitations entity, presented Jozi@Work packages at two regional forums on Tuesday September 27.

 

One of the forums was held at the Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre in Newlands and the other at the Windsor East Community Centre in Windsor.

Jozi@Work is a City initiative aimed at dealing with unemployment, poverty and inequality by partnering with small businesses in the delivery of services such as cleaning, grass-cutting, landscaping, rubbish removal, and repairs and maintenance in their communities. More than R3-billion was set aside for this purpose in the past financial year.

Through the work packages announced in Region B on Tuesday, preferred bidders will be expected to repair and replace paving bricks dislodged or damaged by Johannesburg Water workers during the repairing of burst water pipes. Two co-operatives will be allocated six wards each. They will also be provided with work equipment and gear.

The packages are valued at R83 000 each. The estimated number of people to be employed per co-operative is 16.

“These work packages were prompted by the fact that Johannesburg Water deals with leaking pipes in many regions. As we use heavy machinery to dig and search for burst water pipes, pavements often get damaged. These will need to be repaired. Successful bidders are also expected to restore kerbs and driveways within specified locations in the region,” said Joburg Water’s Mthokozisi Masinga, who added that selected co-operatives needed to use material approved by the South African Bureau of Standards.

The contracts are from 1 December 2016 to 30 June 2017.

Masinga said co-operatives needed to have basic literacy and numeracy skills and sufficient capacity to execute the contract scope.\
