Musical experience to ‘ignite’ Joburg Theatre

31 August 2016

In celebration of his 50th birthday, Lindelani Mkhize of the MTN Joyous Celebration fame, is partnering with Joburg Theatre and ATTV Productions for a two-day musical extravaganza titled IGNITE.

On Friday September 2 and Saturday September 3, the Mandela Stage of the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein will be abuzz with the musical sounds of South Africa’s melodic talent.

This is a fitting tribute for Mkhize, who has been a prominent influencer on the local musical scene for the past two decades. His passion and dedication to his craft has made him a household name in the music fraternity. IGNITE is a state-of-the-art production aimed at showcasing South Africa’s undiscovered or “little-known” musical talent across music genres.

“I’ve always believed that our country is home to an amazing pool of talent and IGNITE is an extension of that belief. I’m so excited that our partners share my sentiment and through this initiative, we hope to ignite talent and promote a culture of unconventional collaborations. We’re creating a platform for undiscovered talent,” he said.

Mkhize wears many musical hats. Besides catapulting Joyous Celebration into an international gospel brand and its performers into global stardom, he is also a top producer, record label executive and a prominent judge on popular TV music shows such as I Want to Sing Gospel and Clash of the Choirs. IGNITE is a continuation of this tradition of excellence.

According to Joburg Theatre’s Ntombi Mashaba, the three-hour production promises to take music enthusiasts on “an unforgettable musical experience and journey rich with colour and flavour” coupled with the creative use of the latest technology to enhance the performances. A six-piece band, brass and a double quartet string section will all be part of the performances.

While most of the featured talent has been identified by Mkhize, he has left a spot or two open for other hopefuls who will have to try their luck via an online platform.

To enter one needs to record a one- of two-minute video clip showcasing one’s talent, post it on the “Lindelani Presents” page on Facebook or Instagram. Get your friends to like or share it. The competition is open to all genres of music – gospel, hip-hop, kwaito and R&B.
