New human settlement on the cards for Rabie Ridge
09 June 2016
In a new move to address the housing backlog in Region A, the City of Johannesburg has expropriated more than 110ha of land in Rabie Ridge for the development of a new human settlement.
The land has been earmarked for the development of between 12 000 and 13 000 low-cost, high-rise RDP housing units, a shopping mall and other public amenities. About 1 890 of the RDP housing units will be provided during the first phase.
This was revealed by the City’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing, Cllr Dan Bovu, at the Rabie Ridge Community Hall on Wednesday June 8. Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Parks Tau is expected to preside over the sod-turning ceremony on Friday June 10.
MMC Bovu was accompanied by Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environment Cllr Matshidiso Mfikoe, Member of Parliament and South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) President Richard Mdakane, and several local councillors when he announced the latest housing development.
“The City bought one piece of land of about 12ha. But this was not enough to meet the demand for low-cost housing in the area, so another piece of land was expropriated.
“There have already been attempts to invade this land. That’s why we’re moving ahead with implementation. We’ve already identified the informal settlements that will benefit from this. A contractor has already been appointed and will be introduced to the community leaders on Tuesday,” Cllr Bovu said.
He said on Tuesday June 14 Mayor Tau and top City officials would meet community leaders to discuss how the project should be implemented.
