Opportunities for Joburg’s start-ups and unemployed

25 October 2016

Officials of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) met Johannesburg’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) at Museum Africa in Newtown for a briefing on opportunities it has for start-ups and the unemployed.

RTIA is an agency of the national Department of Transport set up to encourage compliance with traffic laws. It has established an enterprise development unit to provide job opportunities for start-ups and unemployed people with a flair for entrepreneurship.

Stringent selection criteria will be used to recruit entrepreneurs to perform the agency’s extended services.

Zixolisile Zonke, a Senior Manager at RTIA, said this was all about local economic development. “Start-ups, emerging SMEs and unemployed graduates are those targeted for this programme. Successful entrepreneurs will conduct outreach programmes to communities on behalf of RTIA.

“Once a company has been recruited, we will provide training ... Work will be allocated to entrepreneurs after the training,” said Zonke.

Preferred enterprises will be expected to conduct inspections in loco, create awareness of RTIA’s programmes through workshops and embark on AARTO legislative education awareness campaigns and outreach programmes through kiosks and mobile billboards.

Facilities will be provided by RTIA and each company is expected to hire up to three people.

“The SMEs will also be registered on our database. This is an exciting opportunity as these enterprises could be referred to our sister agencies for future work. Instead of establishing offices nationally, we have implemented this project to create employment,” said Zonke.

Competency requirements include a training and administrative background, and computer literacy. For inspections in loco, admissions as lawyers is a requirement. A background in psychology is required for rehabilitation services.

Interested SMEs and individuals should call Grace Kamaro on 087 285 0500 or visit www.rtia .co.za.
