Over 400 social housing units to be built in Lufhereng

The City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing Cllr Dan Bovu on Wednesday July 27 launched the Lufhereng Social Housing Project, an initiative of the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO).

 

The launch followed the unveiling by Executive Mayor Cllr Parks Tau of the second phase of the Lufhereng Integrated Human Settlement Development which, on completion in 2023, will house more than 22 850 families. It is the biggest human settlement development ever undertaken in Gauteng.

JOSHCO’s project will see the construction of 407 units on two multi-storey and high-density walk-up apartment blocks. These will cater for families with incomes ranging from R2 500 to R15 000 per month per household.

JOSHCO’s Executive Manager: Housing, Cheryl Holmes, said this was a proud moment for the housing company

“The more we develop the more we get better. We’ve added more market-related units. All our new developments are mixed-range products. This is mainly because our main aim is to integrate mixed-income groups. What also makes us happy is that the community is a part of this project. All cleaning and gardening work is done by Jozi@Work contractors,” said Holmes.

Holmes said the objective of the project was to provide affordable and quality social housing in Lufhereng, Soweto and other areas in Johannesburg.

Council Speaker Constance Bapela said she was proud of JOSHCO’s achievements.

“It should also go to other places, like Alexandra, where it will help solve some of the housing problems,” said Cllr Bapela.

To encourage the recycling of water and efficient energy consumption, the project will see the use of solar geysers and water harvesting.

JOSHCO, which recently celebrated its 12th anniversary, has provided more than 7 000 families with homes and plans to develop another 6 000 units in the next five years.
